While studying at the University of Ottawa, I discovered very quickly I work best with the pressure of a deadline looming, and also realized I could get by with little to no sleep. (Every paper I wrote during my four-year degree I’d start writing the night before it was due and pull an all-nighter to finish and submit it on time.) In May 2013, Denis Lanctôt and I recorded some tunes together at the University of Ottawa, including a set of three original tunes: “Road Trip Reel”, “Concession Street Reel”, and this one. The night before the recording session, I still hadn’t written this tune, but knew I wanted one in the key of A to complete the set. After a couple hours of trial and error, this is the tune that resulted, completed around 2 AM. Kudos to Denis for learning it mid-session the next day and still agreeing to record it.
